Geering Up | Motion Graphics Designer

Lead animator for both GU Live and Creative Engineering video intros.

One of my earliest projects with Geering Up was creating an animated intro for their GU Live episodes. In my interview with Geering Up, I mentioned that I was very much interested in animation and motion graphics. This was an opportunity that tested my ability in these areas. GU Live is one of Geering Up's online summer programs. Every weekday at 11am PST, a new livestream is hosted by a member of Geering Up's creative team and each episode discusses a different topic. The creative team decided that they wanted a simple intro to these livestream videos to engage our audience while reinforcing our brand. On this project, I worked as a solo designer under the supervision of Melanie Chapman, Social Media Marketing Specialist at Geering Up. My design process started with sketching out a storyboard and presenting it to my supervisor. Once I got her approval, I would then work on each section of the final animation and present them as drafts. I would then receive feedback and make adjustments accordingly.

After seeing my animated work for GU Live, the Creative Engineering team decided that they wanted an animated intro for their videos too. On this project, I got to work with one other animator under the supervision of Alicia Sun, Video Content Creator Student Assistant at Geering Up. The process was similar to the intro for GU Live, but with more people to work with and more feedback to go through. Although having more feedback on my work helped a lot in the design process, it also proved to be a challenge especially when individuals in the creative team have different visions for how the intro should look. This project took longer because of the number of times we would go back and forth in between designs and deciding on which we should proceed with.

Because animation generally takes a very long time, I spent my first few weeks working overtime to make sure the quality of my work output met my personal standards of excellence.
